Everday I feel like I have playdoh in my nose.

The dust here in Haiti is, well… dusty. When it rains, it rains hard as hell, but it keeps the dust down. Everyday I get up or am getting ready for bed and feel like I have playdoh in my nose. It’s a playdoh-play world and I have the tissues.

I met an awesome man yesterday named Jerry and he is from here in Haiti. Since the military arrived here shortly after the earthquake, Jerry has been an acting linguist for the Army. We sat and chatted for a few about everything pertaining to Haiti, the earthquake and his background. Jerry is 28 years old and speaks not only his native language of French, but also English and Spanish. Speaking with Jerry it really shows how lax our education system is on languages. Seeing as how Haiti is labeled as the poorest area of the world, even the poorest notice the importance of multiple languages. I asked Jerry how his country men and women felt about the US and other countries being here. He said they are very grateful. They knew they needed help and they knew the US would help them greatly. Being in the military, I always ask the locals of an area we are in on their perspective. Usually it is mixed because we are their as an acting war front, but this time it is completely different. When our higher command was putting out the feelers for people to come to Haiti, everyone they spoke with volunteered. Being here is pretty much exactly as you would expect a forward operating base to be like in the middle-of-nowhere Iraq or Afghanistan. We eat hot meals, but most of the time it is MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). We have showers, but basically the setup is two huge fire hoses fed from a 10,000 gallon water bladder. Depending on the temperature of the day, this will dictate the temp of your shower. If we have a few cloudy days, you are getting a cold shower. The water in the bladder has been treated but it is highly advisable not to drink or ingest any of it. We also have the ability to wash clothing, but the water comes from the same bladder as the showers. I guess they are cleaner when they come out but they sure do stick like crap.

So to conclude, the Haitian people are great and friendly. Things are winding down quickly as the Haitian government wants us to wrap up our involvement here and turn things back over to them. As Jerry said yesterday, “Only the Haitian Government hate US, our people love you.”
